Designing without a designer

As part of the journey to become self-employed, you need to completely rely on yourself. You will wear many hats!

Multiple income streams

Another line of business that I’m manifesting is personal training/running coaching. With that, I’ll need to go on accredited courses and ensure that I clock up some serious time learning. I did GCSE PE and A Level Sports Science and Biology so I already have some background on the essentials. I’m off to a great start.

What I’m not so good at is graphic design or imagery. I recently set up my Instagram page @theeverywomanpt and I wanted to be ‘down with the kids’ and create a nine grid photo (a layout where a single large image is arranged as a 3x3 grid on a profile, creating a puzzle or landing page effect). It was a simple portrait photo of me after I had done a morning run in Thailand recently (big flex).

After much Googling and YouTubing, I came across an app. ‘Brilliant!’ I thought. ‘Bish, bash, bosh - you upload the photo and it cuts it into nine pieces for you with helpful numbers added so you know what order to upload them in.’

Anyway…needless to say…it didn’t work and I looked ridiculous. It was deleted immediately and I went in a different direction.

The moral of the story

Being self-employed isn’t about knowing everything - it’s about being brave enough to try, fail, and try again.

My question for you

What silly mistakes or errors have you made in your career journey?
